For my son it's even harder because he's epileptic and the meds make his hands shake a lot. Oh well, he'll probably end up on government assistance, he's smart and could do so much more but at least it will be something.

There are government programs that provide bonuses for corporations who hire and train disabled youth. If your son wants to work, there might be some hidden options, especially in gov't jobs.

Check this out. It might be interesting.

Also, a couple days ago, I got a summons for grand jury duty, so I'll be doing that in Nov and Dec for a few days each. My first time being picked.

1. Congrats on the new gig!

2. Stop playing with ebola samples and get healthy soon!

3. I am an ex-headhunter and I would highly recommend doing whatever it takes to get out of jury duty if your new job is with a private corporation. Jury duty is for the unemployed or those employed by the govt. Everyone else risks getting dinged - quietly and unlawfully, but if you live in "a right to work state", that means you also live in "a right to be fired for no reason state."

Yeah, I'm unfortunately aware of that because I was fired once many years ago and when I talked to the unemployment office they said that employers in my state can fire people for any reason, even if it's it the dubious "business reasons", which was my former employer's joke of a reason.

There are laws against unlawful termination, but almost every employee contract has a mandatory arbitration clause which forces you into negotiating with an arbitrator (ex-judge) of the company's choice. Then its an uphill battle. I've consulted on a few of those fights and the best bet is settlement avoiding judges entirely.

Thanks, but I'm afraid we're in Canada. You'd think that'd make it easier. Oh well, the bigger thing is that he's matured a bit and is starting to get to where we can make some progress. It's frustrating when agencies won't talk to me because he's 20 but he won't go and do it himself. Ah well, patience is a virtue I suppose. We'll get through it one way or another.

My dad sued for wrongful dismissal back in the eighties and won but never worked in his field again. All his employer was allowed to say is that he had worked for them and they weren't allowed to discuss it but that by itself was enough.

Well, I went down for jury duty and didn't get selected so I get the rest of the day off.

Me today...

"Hey, I'm feeling pretty good. Got my work done early, added to the Weapon Porn thread, had a nice chat with some of my neighbors. Things are pretty good. What should I do now? Oh! I know, I'll go take a look at Twitter and see what's going on!"

*Takes a look at the political stories trending on Twitter*

"Ours is a desolate world and we are a lost people."

“There is nothing new under the sun.” That also pertains to politics.

Does it, Endless? DOES IT!!! DOES IT!!! :weep:

'Cause I'm asking for a friend.

When confronted with such terrible derp, as is often found on Twitter, the best recourse to keep my spirits up is to spend some time enjoying relaxing, happy anime like Attack on Titan, Another, or Darker than Back. Afterwards, I like to spend a couple of hours on Nihilist Arbys. I read such gems of wisdom as this...

Today, why not drink enough that you don't even feel the need to cry during sex?

Eat arbys

This weekend, why not grab some arbys, head down to the beach, walk into the sea and leave it all behind.

Eat arbys

Someday you and every single thing you've ever known or loved will cease to exist.

Eat arbys

...and suddenly everything begins to make sense again.

Step One: remove thyself from Twitter.

Step Two: pretend what happens in Washington DC is like a spin-off of As The World Turns. It’ll help you laugh it off.

Step Three: go back to step one.

Yah, it's a fine line. On the one hand, I believe I have a responsibility to be an informed citizen; on the other hand, the news makes me cry and drink too much.

Thank the gods there are RPGs ...

But...but...but...Social Media is so important. It's like, real life and shit.

Seriously, though. I take a look at Twitter about once a week or so. It's like touching a live wire of derp. Even this is becoming too much for me, and I have a high tolerance for derp.

It's the derpocalypse!!

Just like the gypsy woman said.

I have a little kid and business is picking up. I barely even have time for thinking/posting about (let alone playing) teh elfgamez.

I miss gaming but I’m happy that these things are happening right now.

Also it seems my main gaming group is not done imploding itself... :storm::angry::fu:

It's good to stay informed, but it's tough to find the balance between knowing what's going on in the world, doing the best you can for the small section of it that you can influence, and not wanting to end it all out of despair.

I once spent a few months managing to ignore as much news as possible, only seeing things that filtered through enough for other people to specifically push them at me, and I felt better for it. But was I actually better for it? I dunno; I'm sure I missed stuff that was important at the time, I probably looked pretty dumb to other more informed people, and let's just say that while my personal information bubble isn't entirely one-sided, there's definitely a noticeable tilt to it.

Anyway. Today was the 100th anniversary of Finland, and would have been Satoru Iwata's 58th birthday. As I don't think I have any finnish vodka in the house, and I've listened to enough Nightwish to last a lifetime, I'll just settle for playing some Xenoboob Boobicles : Boobs on the Switch.

I love Arby's as much as I hate geese.

I watch Bloomberg news. The politics there tends to be discussed along the lines of 'Yes but will it actually make any real and lasting difference that effects my retirement?'. Usually the answer is 'YES if you retire this week. NO if you retire the next week or later.'.

That's the perspective I like.

Happy anniversary to Finland! :cake:

I agree.

I've pretty much opted out of most news streams. I keep a couple for local and political, but otherwise focus on financial and tech. I consider political news to be cancer. Still, I find myself getting drawn in from time to time; I can try to ignore it, but it often inserts itself in my AFK. I have a lot of coworkers who insist on talking politics; end my day in that crap's in my head.

That being said, I know news and the Web lie to me. The reality on the ground isn't always the same as how news streams seek to portray it.

Arby's is delicious. But it gives me explosive diarrhea every third trip. (Which is strange, I pretty much have a cast iron stomach) The problem being I cant remember if the next time I go, it will be 2nd trip, or the 3rd death trip. Which kinda sucks as their is an Arby's right next door to my workplace. So I don't go there. (Plus I'm a cheap SOB, and Arby's is on the pricier side of the fast food world.)

...explosive diarrhea...

I just found the name of my Part-Time Gods campaign.

I haven't eaten fast food in a while. I ended up at a McD's recently, and I was surprised how the prices have risen. I do remember Arby's being pricey.

In terms of gut bombs, I think my favorite was Hardee's Monster Burger:

Living proof that evil is often beautiful.

I'm a big fan of the Rally's (Checkers) Bacon Roadhouse. When it comes to fast food.

The thing to remember about the news, and it’s the same with the internet: negativity sells. That old line “if it bleeds, it leads” didn’t originate from thin air.

That being said, it's not the news, Endless. It's not the source. It's the reaction. It's the dysfunction of the communication patterns. Information processing errors. The derp. It's hard to explain.

Anyway, I'm sorry. I didn't mean for my earlier post to take us in this direction. I was working out some of my frustration with a goofy post, laughing off the derp. I'm not trying to take us into anything political or anything like that (which I've accidentally done a few times recently).

I just consider this life discussion and how to deal with stress inducers.

Wait.

Just hold on a minute.

Are those...onion rings?

To Hell with Vegetarianism!!!

Speaking of real life, I’ve got my cataract surgery scheduled for January. The eye my retina detached will be nice and clear again. I have to clarify that; it was clear after my retina surgery for about six months until my lens got frosty.

First, Vision is amazing. For the first 38 years of my life I couldn't see beyond my chin. I got Lasik and oh God it's so amazing. My wife and children have never known me with glasses. I can enjoy water sports without worrying about glasses and contacts. I never liked contacts. I do suffer from one side effect of Lazik which is halos at night from lights but other than that no long term issues.

Second, I am white trash. I love fast foods. Arby's, Wendy's, Burger King, taco Time, fat burger, chik fil a, I've met some fast food that was from the third tier I couldn't grow to love but it's rare.

Third, food poisoning. Yeah you eat that cheap it's going to happen. Suck it up and enjoy the free weight loss.

Great news. Cataract surgery is safe, effective and means the world in terms of quality of life. Hope everything goes well.

I dodge LASIK because of the glare side-effect — talked it over with my ophthalmologist and we decided not to do it. Besides, I’d feel weird without glasses; wore them since I was a kid. Though my inability to wear contacts and/or use a decent-looking pair of sunglasses does get kind of frustrating.

It really is what you make of it. I get in the shittiest moods sometimes and really it is for the smallest and most unnecessary reasons. Sometimes life hits you in the gut and that’s hard to deal with but the mental adjustments make all the difference. I still have a lot to learn even in middle age.
