Recommend your favorite television show, cartoon, or anime. Do it! You know you wanna.

So, full disclosure. I only started this thread to babble about anime.

But not now.

No. Now, I'm gonna trash talk.

I rarely watch TV, but when I do, I watch Rick and Morty. (NSFW).

All my homies be like, "Dude, Game of Thrones is freaking awesome!"

And I'm like, "Uh, huh."

Homies: "It's like, so dark and gritty. Important people die!"

Me: "Bitch, please." (NSFW).

Seriously, I love this show.

EDIT: man, all I've done today is make errors in my posts.

Rick & Morty is one of my favorite animations, up there with Archer and Regular Show.

I recently watched S1-5 of House of Cards and watched the quality of the writing falter at times, but strong character acting (Spacey/Frank, Wright/Claire, Kelly/Stamper, Mikkelsen/Petrov, among others) kept me going. (Not unlike Game of Thrones TBH)

Archer is a close second behind R&M. I haven't seen Regular Show or HOC, though I've heard good things.

I tend to come down hard on GOT. But it gets a lot of things right: the visuals, the settings (CGI or not), the battle scenes, the grittiness and ugliness, etc.

I joke to people that GOT tricked an entire generation of Americans into liking fantasy by including full frontal nudity. I don't get invited to many parties.

EDIT: I'll add that a close third, behind Archer, is The Venture Bros. It deconstructs Hanna Barbara the way R&M deconstructs Back to the Future.

I don't own a TV, but have been downloading the following current shows:

Rick & Morty, Twin Peaks: The Return, and Preacher

Off sick today so planning to binge watch
The Mist
The Last Kingdom
Vikings

Been watching
Preacher
Suits
GoT

Recommend beyond the above
Killjoys
Dark Matter
Orphan Black

Would love a good fantasy series outside of GoT now though.

If you're watching Vikings you should take a detour and watch an episode of Norsemen. Think of it as Vikings meets The Life of Brian.

But you have to like that style of humor....

Watched the first 6 episodes of The Tick. Not bad, overall. Much better than the Warburton series. But not as madcap fun as the cartoon.

Watched the first episode. It's on my watch list

Lots of good TV out there at the moment.

The Americans is is a great show about espionage, the Cold War and the toll it takes on people.

Better Call Saul is a worthy prequel to Breaking Bad. Having an idea of where it is headed actually makes it more fascinating.

Fargo was a little off its game this season compared to last, but it was still very good.

Legion takes the X-Men universe in a very trippy direction. As a comic fan, I've always been a little disappointed that comic movies and shows rarely stray in the direction of things like The Invisibles, then this is a good show to catch.

Game of Thrones is not what used to be, but at least this season was more entertaining than last season's lackluster entry. Pretty much all the criticism is earned, but at least there was some genuine humor this season. I'd begun to think the show's sense of humor had been lost.

Twin Peaks: The Return is definitely not for everyone, but I absolutely love it, even when it is at its most frustrating. I've been surprised at how open the show has been in explaining things while still staying weird.

The Good Place really impressed me. It is very tightly plotted for a sitcom. There were points in early episodes where I spotted what I thought were mistakes and flaws, and every one of them turned out to be deliberate. Early on, it sets up what is a pretty clear sitcom premise that could run for years (woman is misidentified and accidentally sent to Heaven. She seeks to keep her cover), and then it blows the whole thing up and goes in a much more ambitious direction. Ted Danson is great in it as well.

I love Rick and Morty, but it has been a busy few weeks, so I need to catch up on that soon.

I love the Preacher TV series.

It's pretty different to the comics - they're pinching elements from all over the series and reusing them to make their own story based on a similar premise - but it works, really well. The lead actors are fantastic as their characters, even if Tulip is... completely different... but I actually prefer this version of her; we're getting a lot more time with her.

Beyond that... the yearly wait for Channel 4 to announce when they are showing SHIELD, and hoping (Probably forlornly) that The Grand Tour won't be as bad this year. I used to be able to watch My Little Pony in the evenings, but the kid's TV channel my daughter watches has moved it to an earlier slot, when I'm still driving home.

I've been digging "Midnight Texas". Not great acting and such. But fun, and interesting.

Darker than Black season 1: The MC is an overpowered, sociopathic badass who saves lolis.

Darker than Black season 2: The MC is an overpowered, sociopathic drunk hobo who abuses lolis.

Still one of my favorite anime.

what are lolis?

Loli is a slang term referring to Japanese anime/manga female characters that are drawn with a youthful or childlike appearance (sometimes an actual child, sometimes not).

Yin, from DTB would be an example of a loli:

EDIT: I shouldn't have to write this, but it's mainly a visual art style, as the protagonists in most anime/mange are younger.

I highly recommend Another.

To date, it's my favorite horror anime.

It's essentially a ghost story with heavy mystery influences. There's a fair bit of gore, just so you know, but the anime is more about the suspense than the goreporn.

I'm not generally a fan of horror or suspense anime, but Another had me captivated from beginning to end.

Cant recall the name of it, but watched a really good horror anime a few years back that had a groundhog day-esque premise. All centered around a harvest festival, during which one or more characters would go insane and sadistically murder others. After this, it would reboot back to the countdown to the festival and follow a different character. Then some scenarios would follow the same path of earlier scenarios but from another PoV.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni.

I actually found that to be too much for me, believe it or not. I remember it to be a relentlessly brutal horror anime.

Thats the one,! I think I was recommended it when I was looking for something "like Elfen Lied", so I'm not surprised its a bit much for folk. I think the core concept was "lets take a cast of normal, good-natured teens and see what we can do, individually, to push each one to the point of animalistic murderers." The ending was satisfying though.

I liked punisher and Orville. Punisher was just food Orville is funny and serious at the same time. So much better to start funny and add serious elements than the other way around

Heh, you've been hanging out at the pub too much
It's been a long day with cranky sick kids. All it takes now is one beer and typos happen.

Although typos combined with auto correct is a whole new bag o fun. It's another skill to learn. While the sentence contains all real words it's fucked up. What was the user trying to type before autocorrect happened?

Just wrapped up Death Note. Very good show, even if the plot of the last few episodes felt a little contrived. And I wish they gave us some closure for Misa. But great show overall.

Probably going for Narcos S03 and then debate whether to get into Vikings (ever late to the party), or Punisher, or The Dark (heard great things about this one).

Seconding Baulderstone's mention of Legion, the most slept on show I can think of. I think my wife and I are the only ones who watched it and I think it is trippy damn near brilliant.

Not fantasy or sf but the Finnish/Icelandic murder mystery Trapped is great stuff.

There is a one season sf series called Ascension I ended up really enjoying. It takes a standard sf trope, the generation starship, that has rarely been dealt with in film or TV and does some cool stuff with it.

I want to get something off my chest.

I've made it clear that I'm a fan of Rick and Morty. Along with Archer, I consider it to be one of the best adult-oriented animated series ever made. The dark humor, the satire, the relentless nihilism, all wrap me in a comforting blanket of reassurance that the Universe is a cold, empty place that probably hates me.

But it's not my favorite. It's not the best.

This is:

Being the cynical, media-hating asshole that I am, I had very low expectations for the final season. I was certain that the story would decline, as I believe most storytelling in media has declined over the last few years. I'd be left with a hollow feeling as I watched the series I loved so much, as I'd come across the inevitable failures that would turn something amazing into something contemptible.

I was wrong. I was dead wrong.

The final season was perfect. Absolutely perfect.

I like being wrong about things.

Samurai Jack is indeed astounding.

But on a complete different subject, Noman, as a fan of Archer, are you familiar with the short-lived series that it is an unofficial sequel to....Frisky Dingo?

I am.

I like FD. But it's not one of my favorites. It's like the Venture Bros in that it's hilarious, satirical, and mocks the source genre from which it derives (like R&M and Archer).

But VB is about failure, and so too is FD, to a lesser extent. Archer and R&M are not, in the sense that the failure themes are there, but they don't dominate the entirety of the show episode after episode. I don't like failure as a theme. It takes away from the humor and wit, and leaves me with a bitter-sweet feeling where I'm laughing and admiring the writer's genius, but simultaneously feeling somewhat diminished.

I like stories about heroism, even if it's tainted, marred, ugly, or savage. I don't like loss as an aesthetic.

So the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie keeps popping up on my xfinity, worth watching? Some of those were hilarious.

I saw it high with an ex. All I can say was, the first time we had to pause it because I was laughing so hard I couldnt see through the tears in my eyes and was buckled over holding my stomach, I was repeating "we...we haven't even gotten to the credits yet!"

I'm not sure if I would watch it sober, (and I havent smoked any pot in like 5 years now, and it was never a regular occurrence), but that remains up there with the first time I saw Monty Python and The Holy Grail at 9 years of age as one of the most hilarious experiences of my life.

I want modern action hour tv. Any suggestions?

The Unit
Man I loved that show. A channel around here was showing reruns of it. Then stopped. I was pissed. I olove that show. I can watch that for days, and then watch for a couple more. I feel the same way about Law and Order: Criminal Intent as well. But that's a different subject/type of show.

Burn notice is good. I watched a few seasons and then stopped for unknown reasons.

Not TV, but as far as online shows, any other On Cinema At the Cinema fans here?

Looking all these shows up is making me sad. Shows I'm pretty sure used to be free on either Netflix or Amazon are gone or expensive. Buying second hand DVDs is looking good again.

Even blu-rays are getting cheap these days.

No joke. I've started buying used Blu Ray players because most are internet enabled and people forget to unlink their accounts. Free movies and TV for me!
