    Call of Cthulhu Chat Thread

I like the original starter set cover, but mostly for the fact that it's a sneaky tribute to the original cover (it's the same general situation only from the monster's perspective), and that sort of nostalgia nod probably isn't what you want for a product aimed at new players. This cover's better.

Nu-TSR suing WotC: Schadenfreude is back on the menu, boys!

Unless they were being shrunk down to microscopic size and injected into James Ward to help him finish writing Giantlands I woudn't call the NuTSR journey a "Fantastic Voyage". Also... didn't they give up on the TSR name? Are they now pivoting back to using it again or is Michael just being...

Nu-TSR suing WotC: Schadenfreude is back on the menu, boys!

My perspective is similar: the "he said" is more than enough to tire me out. I am personally inclined to give Mandy the benefit of the doubt on "she said" because it fits the rest of the picture too well, but you could scrub that out entirely and forgot it was ever mentioned he would still be a...

Nu-TSR suing WotC: Schadenfreude is back on the menu, boys!

Now, be fair. Being over-litigious and treating long-standing TSR employees like shit are the most TSR-like things LaNasa's crew have done so far.

Nu-TSR suing WotC: Schadenfreude is back on the menu, boys!

Yes, unless you were Rockstar Game Designer Gary Gygax or one of a few other made men (being a Blume family member helped) it seems like you often had a bad experience. Game Wizards has the skinny on a lot of incidents. The case which really jumped out at me was the way Rose Estes made Endless...

Nu-TSR suing WotC: Schadenfreude is back on the menu, boys!

It can be a standard clause in some IP contracts - if you want to buy an IP from someone and want them to pinky-swear that it 100% is theirs and they didn't steal it off someone, the threat of them being co-defendants in infringement cases might make them say "Ah oh ah maybe I should double...

Nu-TSR suing WotC: Schadenfreude is back on the menu, boys!

That or he's willing to sweet talk people and use every emotional lever available to him if he thinks he can get them onside. It's bad whichever way you cut it. If he was being open and honest with Darlene, he is hosed and knows it, but is maintaining this fakey-fake swaggering public facade...

Nu-TSR suing WotC: Schadenfreude is back on the menu, boys!

Steering away from anything too "rule 1" in that statement: wow, Ernie Gygax is still involved in this trash fire? What an absurd, ridiculous, utterly pointless hill to choose to die on. Also, interesting that freelancer rates were poor in the industry more or less from the get-go. Apparently...

    Star Wars Reboot

So if I understand the original question right, we can't touch the original movies, the prequels, the sequels, or any expanded universe stuff (Legends-era or Disney era)... In which case, the first question is "what do I actually have the rights to use which is actually distinctly Star Wars...

    Far West 12th Anniversary

To be fair, he may have meant that they don't currently have an in-print licenced game, which they don't - Classified clones the system but can't touch the James Bond IP, for instance. You would expect GMS to know a thing or two about settings which do not have a currently-available RPG -...

Nu-TSR suing WotC: Schadenfreude is back on the menu, boys!

The thing is, I think something largely resembling your plan was already done by the previous nuTSR - the company now known as Solarian, who did that Top Secret reboot with Merle Rasmussen's involvement and Gygax magazine, which had even more original people involved. TSR-era game, original...

Nu-TSR suing WotC: Schadenfreude is back on the menu, boys!

In whose eyes? Anyone who has nostalgia for the TSR days and wants them to come back is already primed to get into the OSR. They will not let the lack of a company called TSR stop them. Anyone who does not have affection for the name will at best not care about a new TSR, at worst regard going...

Nu-TSR suing WotC: Schadenfreude is back on the menu, boys!

I frankly don't see what a new TSR could do which the OSR hasn't already done perfectly well without the TSR name.

What is the most superficial reason you have rejected a RPG for?

Tales of Gargentihr, that was. A real shame that it seemed to have been met with near-total indifference and disappeared, I thought it had some neat ideas.

    Far West 12th Anniversary

Nu-TSR suing WotC: Schadenfreude is back on the menu, boys!

The Streisand effect works best if there's a critical mass of people who are sufficiently outraged by the legal action and sufficiently supportive of the target of the legal action to jump on the bandwagon. LaNasa has burned so many bridges that I don't see that happening here.

Nu-TSR suing WotC: Schadenfreude is back on the menu, boys!

Place bets now: - The plan is to do a new filing, exposing themselves less to potential costs issues and actually including the stuff about the disclaimer they've been promising their Indiegogo backers. - They were hoping nobody would notice the suit has been pulled so they could keep raising...

Nu-TSR suing WotC: Schadenfreude is back on the menu, boys!

If they are dropping it "without prejudice" they are hoping to keep the door open to re-file, but at the very least this seems to be a recognition that the original filing was botched.

Nu-TSR suing WotC: Schadenfreude is back on the menu, boys!

Like I said previously: if nuTSR had started their activities in that dark patch when WotC weren't selling reprints and were largely ignoring Star Frontiers, they might have the ghost of an argument. As it is, even if a judge ruled that WotC's interruption of use was long-standing enough to...
