Cortex Prime Hack: Rolled Initiative

So, I am currently in the process of building Cortex Prime for my Cascade City setting-- urban fantasy meets wuxia meets planetary romance-- and setting things up with my other system influences (primarily BoL and Fight!) and I am looking at initiative.

Generally, I want to use the standard Balsera method, except for in duels, and in the first round of combat I want to roll initiative to determine who goes first.

The default Initiative roll is going to be Agility Attribute + Intellect Attribute + Initiative Technique, plus any relevant Distinctions or Powers.

But what should the Effect Die do?

make it an asset? Literally, seizing the initiative.

cortex prime has a couple of roll initiative options. The one i like is each side rolls, highest total goes first and picks one of their side to go first, then alternative with the other side. there is another where everyone rolls for themselves. They largely don't use the effect die.
