Hexen: Beyond Heretic
One of my favorite games from my mid-teens, and in my mind a clear precursor to the likes of Dark Souls and Bloodborne. I've played it dozens of times, and while I can certainly perceive some flaws and gaps in its design, overall it holds up well if you don't mind old school graphics. I'm especially fond of its maps and textures.

My professional artist brother loves it even more than I do (for him it came out in that critical age range of 10 - 12) and has done some fan art of it worth checking out.

I loved Heretic so much. I played that game like a fiend. Many hours lost to that wonderful game. I even ran a T&T adventure based on it. It didn't translate too well, but I always wanted to do it as a RPG boardgame or cardgame hybrid.

Love the art.

Also, Heretic was one of the first few PC games I got into. Hexen was a favorite of mine as well.

I played Hexen and liked it, till the end which I recall as suddenly being ridiculously difficult compared to the rest of the game.
Nice art From your brother.

Now there's a franchise I'd like to see rebooted! Ideally with Ship's brother as an artist ;)

Nostalgia just hit real bad. Is there anywhere I can download this gem?

The source code for all the Hexen games has been GPLed, which is usually a sign it's been completely abandoned. They're also all on Steam (for me, I don't know if there's region locking on Steam).

Realistically, these are 90's era pre-Direct3D FPSes. The maps aren't that big. Recreating one in a modern game engine would be a final year project for a college video game proramming diploma.
