There was a request on the rpgsite to tell how you would do Spell Jammer right. Here's my response so far:

Broken Worlds

Once the celestial empire stretched across a thousand worlds. The gods of light ruled with wisdom and kindness and the wealth and joy of their servants only grew as the aeons marched on. At that time, men lived and grew old and died but became immortal servants of the gods and dwelt in their presence but still visited and blessed the lives of their loved ones. Some who were not ready after one life time were reborn as their own descendants and given as many chances as they needed to achieve immortality. Yet there was a cankering and festering discontent that grew among the people. No matter how much they had, how free they were, their desires ever overreached their present state. And slowly, the growth of humanity outstripped the power of even the gods to create new worlds and there was ever less and less to be had. A dark power known as uncapped, exponential population growth began to rear its ugly head. It was all consuming and impossibly powerful and even the mightiest gods could not discover a way to escape the unforeseen consequences of the great work they had begun long ago. And, as often happens as food and goods grew scarcer and scarcer people ceased to live in peaceful bliss and began to lie and cheat and steal and rob and murder and as the trust of good men failed, war and horror spread across the celestial empire. Indeed, god turned against god and there was war in the heavens. Worlds were shattered, celestial cities were looted and pillaged. At last there was peace but it was the peace of starvation and desolation. Worse still, untold billions of mortal souls were set loose without bodies to return to, without heavens to enter into even were they still worthy. Gods and their servants were broken, corrupted and destroyed. In the ruins of eternity a desperate few heroes strive to survive and rebuild and find anew their place among the stars.

The Deathless Host
Some among the servants of the gods upon a time dwelt among men and served as the caretakers of the land, seeing to the careful tending of forest and wild places. As populations surged, these found themselves at odds with the children of men, for their part was to care for the wild and over long ages they had become one with the wild. As war and desolation spread these found themselves faced with the desperate choice of destroying the mortals who entered their realms in order to preserve the very life of their worlds. As worlds shattered and stars fell they became estranged from man even more, their divine energies becoming tainted with the green vapour of nature. Certain gods, associated with nature and life were sympathetic to their cause and stood against their brothers for no children of men would survive should the death of worlds. Now among the broken worlds, the living ships of the deathless host raid and destroy human settlements wherever they are found, implacable and merciless in their crusade to preserve life itself.

The Vanguard of Night
As war and death swept among the worlds, there were no longer enough births for the unworthy to be reborn. Their spirits raged in the void in untold numbers. Great was their weeping and gnashing of teeth and some, at first few but in ever growing numbers, broke the great ban and committed dark abomination. Spirits of men taking on the form of beasts which causes great suffering, deformity and madness. Out of that horror wrought of desperation, a new breed broke upon the ravaged worlds in waves. These, misshapen things, part man, part beast with their twisted bodies and tangled minds have become a plague as their numbers grow.
