I haven't seen any threads on Tales of the Valiant, save for those discussing 'why does this even exist?' by people who have forgotten recent history or further rehashing the OGL debacle. I'd prefer to talk about the Player's Guide and Monster Vault, please.

My initial takeaway ATM is this isn't a simple rehashing of 5E; there are a lot of subtle differences. Secondarily, there is a disappointing lack of subclasses; each class only gets two, instead of the three minimum we see in 5E. This is particularly hindering to classes like the Cleric and Sorcerer where the subclass details your power's focus, but hurts every class.

Thoughts?

In ToV, the subclass's progression is standardized, while in 5e, they vary between the different classes. This could be a bad thing from working with 5e itself. The different rates of progression allowed more variations in how a class plays over time.

This amount of standardization could lead to a more cookie-cutter feel between the different classes.
